ALFREDO COSTA MONTEIRO

Born in Porto, Portugal, in 1962, Alfredo Costa Monteiro lives and works in Barcelona since 1992 focusing on the fields of music, poetry and visual arts. As a musician he works primarily in improvisation and composition for guitar, accordion and turntable, having more recently produced a work for computer, building pieces of detailed attention to texture and tension. Besides his solo works he is part of the groups Cremaster (with Ferran Fages), I Treni Inerti (with Ruth Barberán), Neumatica (with Pablo Rega) and the trio Fages / Barberám / Monteiro, and has collaborated with John Duncan, Manuel Mota, Mattin and Margarida Garcia, among many othters. Since 1999 Monteiro has released more than 30 records in various international labels. He has also published poetry works in Portuguese, Spanish and French. Since 2006 he has been involved in two projects that seek convergences between different performance arts including theatre, music and video: the collective label.m and the theatre company Emilie Saar. In 2007 he has composed the soundtrack for the dance piece La Poca Casa which received award from TV3 and NU.

ANNETTE KREBS

Born in Saarland, Germany, in 1967, Annette Krebs has studied guitar, focusing the majority of her activity on this instrument, but also on the computer and assorted objects. Active in the fields of improvisation and composition, as well as in the crossover between both, since the end of the 90s, she uses various preparation methods to produce a rich palette of sounds which, articulated with fragments from other sources like radios and cassettes, form the basis to the construction and de-construction of delicate and abstract soundscapes. As well as being a member of the super group Phosphor, she maintains ongoing collaborations with Anthea Caddy, Robin Hayward, Steffi Weismann e Luca Venitucci. In the past she has collaborated with Andrea Neuman, Michael Vorfeld, Toshimaru Nakamura, Birgit Uhler, Jim Denley, Martin Tétreault, Rhodri Davies, Keith Rowe and Otomo Yoshihide, among others. She has participated in various renowned experimental / improvised music festivals, including Sonic Perspectives, LMC, I-and-E, Unlimited 13 and Densités.

AXEL DÖRNER

Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1964, Axel Dörner is a prominent trumpet player working in the fields of New Jazz and Free Improvisation since the mid-89s. He studied piano in Germany and the Netherlands later choosing the trumpet as his main instrument, for which he has developed and stunning array of new techniques. Dörner created his first group in 1992, the Axel Dörner Quartet, and also plays in the groups The Contest of Pleasures, Phosphor and Otomo Yoshihide New Jazz Orchestra. In the past he played in the following ensembles: Berlim Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Lawrence Butch Morris Orchestra, Chris Burn Ensemble and Zeitkratzer, to name a few. Being one of the most request musicians he has played extensively around the world, having collaborated with hundreds of musicians. Due to a more collaborative nature, his first solo album only came out in 2001. Besides that one he has released over 65 records in various labels.

JEAN-LUC GUIONNET
Born in Lyon, France, in 1966, Jean-Luc Guionnet is an electroacoustic music improviser and composer. His main instrument is the saxophone but he also works with electronics, harmonium and church organs. He studied Aesthetics at La Sobornne, Paris, with Iannis Xenákis, Geneviève Clancy and Bernard Tesseydre and tape music at the conservatory of Bologne. Guionnet is concerned, among many other themes, with the propagation and distribution of forms, musical and others, in time and space as an experience of testing reality but also of redefining the body from the interaction with the purely physical environment. He is part of the groups Phéromone, Hubbub, Téphras, Calx, Synapses and Tore and collaborates frequently with Éric Cordier, Seijiro Murayama, Éric La Casa and Pascal Battus, to name a few. He has composed for theatre and contemporary dance as well as for experimental film. He is a member of the editorial board of the arts and philosophy magazine Terres des Signes. He also works as a visual artist, having presented his work in France.

KLAUS FILIP

Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1962, Klau Filip composes and improvises using the laptop as a generator and manipulator of pure tones. Teacher of applied arts at the University of Vienna, he is active in the fields of experimental music and electronica since the late 80s. He is the creator of the famous Lloopp software - a tool for real time improvisation with the computer - used by some of the most famous laptopers including Christian Fennesz and Christoff Kurzmann. Besides the two before mentioned musicians he has also collaborated with Radu Malfatti, Werner Dafeldecker, dieb13, Boris Hauf, Jason Kahn, John Butcher, Noid, Mattin, Taku Unami, Toshimaru Nakamura and John Tilbury. He is also part of the groups Los Glissandinos, Taus and Ease. Filip composes frequently for theatre, cinema and dance and presents workshops in computer music throughout the world. He is the creator and / or member of the following multimedia projects: Bigbaby, Tripple Duo, Transit, Reheat and rahmenbedingung.

KO ISHIKAWA

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1963, Ko Ishikawa is a renowned sho player - the sho is a Japanese traditional instrument defined as a mouth organ. He has studied Gagaku music - a style of traditional / imperial Japanese music - with the masters Mayumi Miyata, Hideaki Bunno and Sukeyasu Shiba and is a member of the Reigakusha orchestra since 1987, having performed numerous times around the world as part of it. More recently Ishikawa has started working as an improviser having worked with Otomo Yoshihide, Gene Coleman, Rhodri Davies e Taku Unami, among others.

MASAHIKO OKURA

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1966, Masahiko Okura began his career in the early 90s as member of the band Dub Sonic Warrior, having been in contact with improvisation since the same period. He has developed a unique style for the alto saxophone and tubes. Okura is the leader of the groups Gnu, electric jazz, and Shida, acoustic improvisation, and is a member of Otomo Yoshhide New Jazz Orchestra, also collaborating frequently with Unami, Taku Sugimoto and Tetuzi Akiyama in various groupings. He has released two solo albums and has participated in over 50 more. He is one of the co-organisers of the concert series in Tokyo named Chamber Music Concerts.

MATTIN

Born in 1977 in the Basque Country, Mattin is a improviser focusing mainly on the computer, guitar and voice working the spectrum between near-silence minimalism and full on noise, frequently undermining expectations and constantly surprising the listeners at various levels. He is part of the groups Sakada, Josetxo Griea, Billy Bao and No More Music, to name a few, and has collaborated with Eddie Prévost, Mark Wastell, Rosy Parlane, Radu Malfatti, Dion Workman, Tim Barnes, Oren Ambarchi, Margarida Garcia, Christof Kurzmann, Cremaster, Axel Dörner, Taku Unami, Tony Conrad and Michel Henritzi, among many others. Mattin has played extensively around the world in various tours in Europe, Japan, USA, China, Canada and Australia. He has released more than 50 records in various labels including his own labels w.m.o./r., Desetxea and Free Software Series. As the name of the last label may indicate he is a defender and theorist of free contents and publishes all his music under the anti-copyright license. He has written for books and magazines about improvisation, noise, intellectual property and cultural industry.

NIKOS VELIOTIS

Born in Athens, Greece, in 1970, Nikos Veliotis is a musician and a vídeo artist. He works as a cello improviser, composer and performer, moving himself in various grounds from freeform music to pop. He is a member of the groups Looper (with Martin Küchen and Ingar Zach), MASS (Looper and John Tilbury, CRANC and trycicle. As a video artist Veliotis has created various experimental videos and some musical videos.

TAKU UNAMI

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1976, Taku Unami is a composer and improviser working with assorted stringed instruments, including the guitar, bandoli, and contraguitar, laptop and vibrating objects (from which he amplifies the inaudible vibrations). Despite being linked to minimal improvisation his music is hardly classifiable, being able to surprise listeners on every new release, raising unforeseen questions and trailing new paths for improvisation. He is part of the group HOSE and has active collaborations with Mattin, Taku Sugimoto and Masahiko Okura. In the past he has worked with Radu Malfatti, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Klaus Filip, Masafumi Ezaki, Burkhard Stangl, Rhodri Davies e Nikos Veliotis, among others. Unami has also composed for film, including destacam Lost My Way (directed by Takeshi Furusawa) and In 10000 years (directed by Isao Okishima). He has released more than 30 records, solo and in other groups and collaborations. He runs the influential label Hibari Music and co-organizes the Tokyo concert series Chamber Music Concerts with Taku Sugimoto and Masahiko Okura.
