Malfatti likes to reduce his own biography into a few lines: 16.12.43 Born in Innsbruck, Austria / 1965-70 Looked for the Academy of Music in Graz / Studied with Eje Thelin / Spoke with Sonny Rollins / Drank coffee with Luigi Nono / Likes to play chess with Siegfried Fussy / Read a lot, forgot everything. Despite the minimal consonance with his music, Malfatti's story has more to be said about. He started his career, in the 70s, in Jazz and Free Improvisation, working with Arjen Gorter, Paul Lovens, Peter Kowald, Paul Rutherford, Chris McGregor's, Elton Dean's Ninesense, Nick Evans Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Paul Lytton, John Stevens, Trevor Watts, Phil Wachsmann, Hugh Davies and Tony Oxley. In the 80s, along with the works in improvisation, he started to focus, in a progressive manner, on composed works for various instruments and electronics. His sound became progressively minimal, establishing a unique style of near ultraminimalism, concerned with question of phenomenology and memory of sound and its placement in space and time. More recently he has worked in improvisational contexts with Mattin and Klaus Filip, among others, and still composes prolifically. He has received numerous commissions for compositions and has seen has performed, or has seen his work performed, in various contemporary music festivals.
